Welcome to this week's edition of the Toro Bulletin!
Can you believe it? We officially have just four weeks of school left! As we enter the home stretch of the academic year, our campus is buzzing with energy, final projects, and anticipation for the summer break.
We have a busy and exciting week ahead of us. Here is a quick look at what you will find in this week's newsletter:
- 3rd Grade EOY Assessments: Our 3rd-grade students will be completing their End of Year assessments this week. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and growth this year!
- 5th Grade Study Trip: Our 5th graders are heading out on an exciting study trip this week
- SY 26/27 Calendar: To help you get a head start on planning for next year, the official school calendar for the 2026-2027 School Year is included in this week's issue.
- Volunteers Needed for Field Day: We are actively seeking parent volunteers for our annual Field Day event on May 27th. We would love your help to make this a fun and memorable day for the students!

Upcoming ELA Assessments for 3rd Graders!
Attention 3rd-grade families! Our students will be taking their end-of-year English Language Arts (ELA) assessments on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
To help our students feel confident and ready to do their best, we ask for your partnership at home. Please ensure your child:
- Gets a great night's sleep the evening before each test.
- Eats a healthy, nutritious breakfast to fuel their brain.
- Arrives at school on time so they have plenty of time to settle in and relax before testing begins.

📚 From the Library: End-of-Year Wrap Up
As we approach the end of a fantastic school year, it’s time to start gathering our favorite stories and returning them to the library shelves. To ensure all our books are accounted for before summer break, please take note of the following deadlines:

Closing Procedures
- Final Checkouts: Students are encouraged to grab their final reads by May 21. After this date, we will begin our annual inventory process.
- Search Your Shelves: Please take a moment this week to look under beds, in backpacks, and on home bookshelves for any stray library books.
- Returning Items: Books can be dropped off in the library return bin during school hours.
Thank you for your help in keeping our collection complete for next year’s students! If you have any questions regarding lost books or account balances, please stop by the media center to speak with our library staff.

Feel the Spring: Upcoming Concerts at D.G.F. Elementary!
Spring is officially here, and it is time to celebrate with some beautiful music! Welcome the season with us at Rota Elementary School as our talented students present their "Feel the Spring" concerts. We are thrilled to invite our families to join us for these delightful morning performances.
Please mark your calendars with the following schedule:
- 4th Grade: Monday, May 18, 2026, from 08:30 to 09:00.
- 3rd Grade: Tuesday, May 19, 2026, from 08:30 to 09:00.
- 5th Grade: Wednesday, May 20, 2026, from 08:30 to 09:00.
All performances will be held in the MPB at our campus in Rota, Spain.
We look forward to seeing you there to support our students and enjoy the music!
Study Trips: Important Guidelines!
We are excited as our grade levels get ready for their upcoming study trips, which are wonderful opportunities for students to learn outside the classroom. To guarantee that every excursion is safe, organized, and successful, please follow the outlined key guidelines for families. These policies help staff maintain continuous supervision and focus:
- Mandatory Bus Travel: All students must ride the provided bus to and from the destination.
- Meeting at the Venue: Parents and siblings are kindly asked not to meet the group at the study trip location. Having extra guests arrive at the venue adds significant challenges to managing the group and supervising the students effectively.
- No Siblings on Trips: Younger preschool-age children and siblings from other classrooms are not permitted to accompany the group. This rule ensures that staff can dedicate their full attention to the participating class.
- Return for Check-Out: There is a strict policy against non-emergency early check-outs directly from the trip location. All students must return to the school campus on the bus before they can be officially checked out.

School Registration: SY 2026-2027
It’s time to confirm your student’s enrollment status for the upcoming school year. All parents must submit a re-registration request via the DSIS Family Portal to indicate if their student is returning or leaving.
Quick Tips for Success
- Select the Right Section: Use the "Current Student Re-Registration" tab.
- Upload Documents: If your orders are expired or expiring, upload new ones or extensions in the Documents tab.
- Update Info: Review and edit contacts, employment status, and student health records. Clearly mark any emergency contacts to be added or removed.
- Deadlines: Complete the process as soon as possible (no later than the end of the school year) to help with staffing and resource planning.

- Space-Available Students: Re-registration does not guarantee a seat for the next year. Your school will contact you regarding additional requirements.

School Advisory Committee 4 Quarter Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, May 5th, 2026, at 3:00 p.m.
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm.
II. Roll Call
Teacher representatives, SAC members, the Principal, and parents attended the meeting. Mrs. Paul (Vice-Chairperson) was absent.
III. Attendance
Attendance was recorded by sign-in.
IV. Principal’s Report
- April was a very busy month at Rota Elementary School. Mr. Kirk expressed his appreciation for all the events, highlighting the efforts of staff, parents, students, and volunteers in making each event special.
- Field Day is scheduled for May 27th, and the school is seeking volunteers to help with the event.
- Teacher Appreciation Week is taking place this week, from May 4th to 8th.
- All grade-level assessments will be completed by next week.
- School registration has begun. Parents should indicate whether students will be returning to Rota ES for the next school year or leaving. All parents are required to submit a re-registration request via the DSIS Family Portal.
- A new ship is arriving in Rota, and families with orders have started registering.
- The estimated enrollment for next school year is about 600-650 students.
- There will be two teacher vacancies next school year, as well as openings for teacher aides and substitute teachers.
- Fifth-grade promotion will be held on June 8th.
- The School Year 2026-2027 calendar has been released.
V. PTSA’s Report
- The PTSA is seeking volunteers for Field Day on May 27th. Shirts for the event have been ordered.
- Volunteers are also needed for the fifth grade and kindergarten end-of-year celebrations.
VI. Open Issues
- Consistency in Classroom Curricula and Teaching Methods: A community member raised concerns about variations in teaching styles and curricula. They requested a more standardized curriculum across classrooms within the same grade level to ensure equity and consistency. Ms. Rodriguez (Assistant Principal) responded that all grade levels follow the same standards and curriculum, though teachers employ different teaching methods. Teachers are encouraged to use approaches that work best for them, but must adhere to the DOWEA Europe curriculum standards. Teachers also collaborate in planning, and assessments are aligned with the curriculum. The curriculum is presented to parents and students during meet and greet events. Parents are encouraged to reach out to Mr. Kirk or Ms. Rodriguez with specific questions or concerns.
- Feedback on "Purple Up" Event Logistics and Future Scheduling Recommendations: A parent provided positive feedback on the ‘Purple Up’ event, praising the administration and PTSA’s efforts. However, logistical challenges were noted, including long wait times for food after the parent seminar. To better accommodate working families, it was recommended to spread celebration activities over the entire month and consider hosting smaller, morning seminars with light refreshments instead of a single evening event. Mr. Kirk appreciated the feedback and will explore ways to serve food more quickly, spread out events, and recruit more volunteers. He intends to plan differently for the next school year.
- Communication and Information Session Request for the APPS Program: Several parents requested improved communication regarding the APPS program, specifically seeking more details on its structure, testing and selection process, and student benefits. They suggested the program coordinator host an introductory morning meeting for parents and new or prospective students to outline the program and answer questions. Mr. Kirk agreed this is a good suggestion and will share it with the coordinator. He acknowledged the need for better communication and introduction of the program, especially since there is a new coordinator and the program has been revised this year.
VII. Open Session (not to exceed 15 minutes)
DOWEA is collaborating with the NAVY to provide relocatable classrooms.
VIII. New Business
- EOY Year Report: The End-of-Year report will be distributed at the conclusion of the school year.
- SAC SY 26/27: Elections for the School Advisory Committee for the 2026-2027 school year will take place in August 2026.
IX. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 3:29 pm.

Depending on your situation, there are several dedicated teams ready to listen and help:
- For Everyday Support: Reach out to School Mental Health Support or the Rota School Complex staff (teachers, counselors, or the principal) during school hours.
- For Specialized Counseling: * MFLC (Military & Family Life Counselors): Great for talking through stressful life events (requires parent permission).
- FFSC (Fleet & Family Support Center): Helps with adjusting to life in Rota or deployment stress. Call 956-82-3232.
- EDIS Mental Health: Offers medical/mental health counseling for anxiety, depression, and ADHD.
- For Low-Barrier Access: The Integrated Behavioral Health Clinic (IBHC) offers tools for sleep, stress, and mood with no referral needed. Call 956-82-3618.
- For Spiritual or Personal Guidance: Command Chaplains are available for school issues, grief, or faith concerns. Call +34 956 82 2161.
🚨 Emergency & Crisis Support
If you are in danger of hurting yourself or others, please use these resources immediately:
- Crisis Line: Call 988 on base for 24/7 support.
- Emergency Department: Go directly to the ER or call 911 on base (112 off base).

What is Child Find?
Is your child reaching their milestones? If you have questions about your child’s development or learning, now is the time to get answers.
Child Find is a free service provided by DODEA for children from birth to age 21. It’s designed to identify developmental delays or learning challenges early, ensuring every child gets the support they need to thrive.
When Should You Seek Help?
You should consider scheduling a screening if:
- You have general concerns about your child’s learning or development.
- Your child struggles with speech, vision, hearing, or motor skills.
- There is a diagnosed condition or health issue impacting their growth.

Our MFLC counselors are dedicated to helping students navigate the unique challenges of military life, including:

- Peer relationships and social skills
- Emotional well-being and academic success
Action Required: Complete the ROI Form
To allow your child to receive individualized support from the MFLC, we must have a completed Release of Information (ROI) form on file. Without this form, the counselor is limited to general classroom interactions only.

- Request to have one sent home with your student.
